1956 Oval Window Ragtop Deluxe
More about Oval Window...and it's origin

Having being involved with aircooled VW's since the late 70's...I was fortunate enough to have attended many of the original Orange County Bug-In's as a young teenager. I had many VW's throughout the years including my first '67 Sedan, a '56 oval ragtop, a '67 sunroof squareback, a '63 kombi bus, a '68 sedan, a '68 hardtop Karmann Ghia, a convertible '67 Karmann ghia, and the 1956 Ragtop you see here. After losing my last project in a divorce, I had decided I was done with building project cars...then one day a friend of mine, Joe Maestas, attended the Phoenix Bug-O-Rama in 2000. He brought me the picture you see on the photo page...we drove back the next day with a tow bar and a wallet full of cash and purchased the car from it's original owner for $2600.00. The car had a faded light blue paint job over it's original Stratos Silver paint with everything else stuffed in boxes. Once the car was home, I had a chance to sift through the boxes and found that the car was totally complete...minus a few molding pieces. Not bad for starters huh?

The car was purchased to be used as a daily driver and when my daughter is old enough to drive, I promised her that she would get the keys...well, my good buddy Louie Villaroel from "Rock Bottom Customs" in Los Angeles and Jaime Carillo from Covina Collision did such a nice job with the prep and paint, I was obligated to finish the car in show fashion. One thing led to another and here I was with another show car...damn. I showed it and drove it with it's original 36 horsepower drive train for the first few years, then as I was cruising along the 210 fwy...I heard some loud knocking. This was my excuse to build a big horsepower street motor and really have some fun. Four months later and WOW...what a thrill.
