News and Updates:

November 10, 2010:

With the 2010 season done I am happy to report that I was able to finish in 5th place out of 19 Pro-Mod competitors. Racing against some of the biggest named in VW Drag Racing such as Eric Calabrese, Kris Lauffer, Pat Dawns, Richie Webb, and many more...my new turbo set up is just scratching the surface of it's potential. I am currently still in the testing stages and seem to be finding the weak links as we continue to test and learn the whole forced induction theory. It's definitely a learning curve after running normally asperated with nitrous oxide to make power. I would say that it was a successful season after running a 9.56 ET @ 137+ MPH on our first outing with the new set up. This was in Sacramento in May and this qualified us 8th out of 18 that showed up for what was called the "2010 Pro-Modified Shootout". I plan on spending a lot of time on the chassis dyno over the off season and will also be spending time testing at Irwindale and Fontana as time and money permit.

Race Report for Drag Day :

What a day at the races...I have been running a new class called “Outlaw Turbo” which is comprised of the quickest VW’s on the west coast which included all the heavy hitters in the industry. Even though the class was designed for cars with turbo with no other power adders, they do allow “nitrous” car as well as “all motor” cars in an effort to level the playing field. There is not too many rules other then the cars need to be door-slammer type of cars so no dragsters, or rails are allowed. There are no weight restrictions so it is basically a “run what you brung” format hence the “Outlaw” name.

Well...it was a perfect day for racing! The air was nice and cool and the track prep was great. I decided to put the bigger nitrous/fuel jets (34n-30f) in the car since we recently made a few changes to accommodate a bigger shot. We also did some suspension upgrades and are using a new set of adjustable rear shocks to tame the car off the line. We had just finished the new motor set up on Friday afternoon and this did not allow any time for us to test the car at a track...First round of qualifying, the car launched straight and pulled harder then ever. It sounded nice and crisp 1st through 3rd gears but as soon as I hit 4th gear it started to bog down. It felt like it went flat so I shut it down and coasted through 4th gear. It ran a 6.45 @ 103 MPH putting me in the # 2 spot after the first round of qualifying this was an 1/8th mile race so that is equivalent to a 10.0X in the ¼ mile...I know that was at least a 6.2X pass if I would have been able to run it out which would have definitely put us in the 9’s. I got back to the pit and started looking at everything…the plugs looked real nice and I couldn't see anything obvious...until I went to fire the motor up. It was seized up!!! I put a socket on the pulley bolt and the motor didn't budge...so I was done for the day. I finished the day as a spectator! I started taking things apart as soon as I got home and # 4 rod is seized onto the crank but since it's in a position where it is not touching the case, the crank should be able to turn a little bit...well, it isn't...so that tells me that the crank is seized up also. It's probably the rear main bearing but I still have to split the case to find out. The good thing is that there are no holes in the case and the heads look OK. They did touch the top of the piston though...probably when the rod bearing was going away. We have a spare motor to run at Sacramento so I won't miss that race...it's a little smaller motor and is set up with less compression so we might not run as hard...that's ok though...as long as we don’t miss a race.
